About allergies
Allergies . About allergies

An allergy is a hypersensitivity. The word allergy is derivers from the Greek words ”allos” and refers to an altered, atypical reaction. It means, that a person reacts differently as he expects and in a different manner as other people do.

The immune system  is very complicated and complex part of the human organism. The physical factors, hormones, the metabolic process, blood pressure and also psychological factors can affect our immune system.  One of the psychological factors is stress, in the past named also the disease with 1000 faces. The stress can affect the blood pressure, our breathing and causes headaches, tiredness and digestive disorders. Stress can affect directly the functioning of the immune system.

An allergy is a type of immune reaction. Normally, the immune system responds to foreign microorganisms or particles. An exaggerate reaction of the immune system on foreign particles and also on a concrete substance, that usually doesn’t cause any reactions, can trigger the human organism to respond with a hypersensitive reaction – with an allergy.
The substance that provokes this unexpected reaction is called allergen or antigen.

In most cases the allergens enter in the human organism through the mucous membrane of the respiratory system or the digestive system.
Usually the allergens are proteins or protein-bounded substances that provoke the functioning of the immune system, which stimulates the body’s defense system. It causes a chain reaction that normally starts with the release of histamine and ends with the formation of antibodies that are supposed to eliminate the offending substance from the organism.

This struggle between the human organism and the allergen causes different reactions of the human body. The reaction that we can feel and notice is the allergy. An itchy skin condition caused by an allergic reaction to material in contact with the skin is called allergic contact dermatitis.

There are many different types of allergies.

  • Respiratory allergy seasonal or chronic allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic asthma. The symptoms of this allergies are sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, nasal itching (rubbing), itchy ears and throat, pressure and noise in the chest, hard breathing, itchy eyes etc.

  • On the skin it shows as hives (urticaria) - nettle rush, atopic dermatitis (often this conditions run from the childhood), contact dermatitis (skin rashes, blisters, itching, eczema etc.

  • Food allergies –  cow milk, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc. The most common signs and symptoms are abdominal pan, diarrhea, indigestion in combination with skin reactions and respiratory system problems.

  • The most common allergies: insect sting allergy, allergies to medicines, dust mites, molds, animal hair and dander etc., itd.

  • Anaphylaxis  is an hypersensitivity reaction of the immune system. The most common signs are hives, angioedema (swelling of the lips and tongue), hypotension (low blood pressure), respiratory distress etc. This condition requires an immediate professional medical attention. Anaphylaxis is an severe, whole-body life-threatening allergic reaction.

In the last 30 years the number of allergic patients has doubled, according to some information even tripled, and the number is still growing., The cause of such increment is the lack of diagnostic methods in the past. Today we can diagnose with more methods and tests (skin tests, blood test, provocation tests), and we dispose of better information and knowledge.
The allergies are present in almost every family nowadays. According to a report published recently, more then 40.000 children in Slovenia has allergies.
Our body can resist to more than 20.000 allergens we know. The number of these allergens is growing. Not only the pollen, molds, dust mites, animal dander, and insect stings, also the food and the medicines – substances that should not be foreign substances –allergens.

An allergy is a dangerous chronic disease, that every year affects more and more people.  The individuals that suffer more are children with serious symptoms. The symptoms are increasing with time causing severe allergic reactions and they can seriously endanger their lives. That’s why we shouldn’t be superficial when we are looking for a solution to this global medical problem. With the dr.
